First duck egg of the year

We found our first duck egg of the year this morning. This means we need to keep the ducks in later in the morning. When a duck gets serious about hatching some eggs, she will build a nest and lay her eggs in it. But when she’s not serious about making babies, she just drops the eggs wherever she happens to be when nature calls. This means we can be walking across the yard and, crunch, oops, there was a duck egg.  Duck eggs are surprisingly well camouflaged in a yard with uneven clumps of grass.  Looking across the yard at an angle, they are hard to see. Time to start our daily duck egg scan of the yard. And, those who have been asking for duck eggs all winter – I will take names for a waiting list.
