Whew. I don’t know when I’ve seen it this dry this early. It makes weed control easy, but the water pump is running 18 hours/day. We use drip tape which is water efficient, and try to make sure all the veggies get one good soak a week, but while they are new transplants they need more, and seeds need to be kept moist. The early planted broccoli family is behind because I gave them one good watering and then left them alone as usual. They just sat there and got chewed on by flea beetles. Now I am watering them and they are coming to life.
This is “in between” time – this will be the last harvest of hoophouse chard (the cherry tomatoes are anxiously awaiting that space) and the field chard will be a few weeks. The kale we transplanted suffered from dryness but is now putting out new growth, but again I expect it to be a couple weeks before we harvest again.
Carrots have germinated well (I kept them wet – learned that lesson). Peas are about a foot tall. Fortunately I planted two rows of snap peas because Tony mowed one row yesterday.
