August 11th CSA update

We transplanted cabbage and broccoli seedlings yesterday and this evening.  Still have more plus a lot of kale for the fall.  Fall carrots and beets are looking good, mostly weed free thanks to some helpers. I am driving down to Essex Farm Thursday morning to deliver tomatoes in exchange for beets, parsley, and chard for [...]

Disaster averted.

Whew. I went out this morning to load the ducks and veggies for market, and the walkin cooler was not running and it was in the high 40s, instead of the usual 34 degrees.  I checked the circuit breakers and plug – all OK.  Packed all the poultry in lots of cold packs and headed [...]

Fried squash blossoms

Maybe sauteed squash blossoms sound better? Saw a surplus of really nice male squash blossoms at the edge of the winter squash field this evening, so just had my first stuffed squash blossoms of the season. Stuffed some with chevre, some with Parmesan, dipped in egg and flour, then sauteed in olive oil. Yummm.  10 [...]

When it rains…

At this point, I’ll take it.  It has been SOOOOOO dry. Ideally we would get an inch to 1 1/2 inches of rain each week, preferably in one day. Sprinkles encourage disease but don’t provide much water. Tuesday was quite muddy in the field after 1.2″ of rain.  The boots get really heavy.  About 5:15 [...]

July 22 CSA

I know I’ve said it most weeks, I expect the pickings to be light, but you have been content.  This week I REALLY expect them to be light, but I don’t feel as bad about it as I have previously.  I did buy salad mix for you. We have lots of wonderful onions (sweet sandwich [...]

Love the rain

Until the last couple weeks, all the rain went around us and we were extremely dry.  I am grateful for today’s rain, though it put a halt to field work. We butchered chickens this morning, starting at 5:30, finished about 10, except still have to put stuff away. They are chilling/draining in the cooler so [...]

Ahhh, the good things of summer

have arrived!  Tabouli with Sungolds and Black Prince tomatoes. Costata Romanesco sliced and slathered in olive oil and juicy fresh garlic, then roasted.  The CSA did not take all the Costatas so I can eat guilt-free.  There were a handful of Sungolds and two Black Princes, one of which was soft overripe. so also guilt-free.  [...]

Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb

Had a leisurely morning – rolled over and didn’t get up until 6. Did basic chicken chores, then went out to the hoophouse to see if there were enough cherry tomatoes ripe to support the first batch of tabouli of the season and to let the geese out.  That morfed into an hour or so [...]

Whew. I don’t know when I’ve seen it this dry this early. It makes weed control easy, but the water pump is running 18 hours/day. We use drip tape which is water efficient, and try to make sure all the veggies get one good soak a week, but while they are new transplants they need [...]

Babies are active.

Our first two goslings hatched and are out and about.  The geese tend to do communal nesting and mothering, so two adults were escorting the first two goslings around while a mama is still sitting on eggs.  This is from the second mama that started setting. The first mama is well overdue and we are [...]
