The end of January

I expect my first sore muscles of 2012 tonight or tomorrow. In the new tunnel I dug two shovel wide 8 inch deep furrows about half the length (so 60 feet) along where some of the tomatoes will go to bury some chicken bedding as fertilizer for them.  I want to get that done now [...]

Mid-November

Here is how the new hoophouse looks. The sides and main end doors roll up.  We will put “people doors” also in the end walls so we don’t have to unfasten and roll up the big doors to get in in the winter. As soon as we got the plastic on the end walls, I [...]

Only one more week?

I must be getting ancient – time has really flown by this summer and fall. New this week – white sweet potatoes!  I planted 100 slips as an experiment (and 800 of the red slips).  Both varieties did well.       This is a really nice clump – one plant – of the orange [...]

Garden looks pretty good.

Took a couple shots this morning: The south field.  Bottom to top: strawberry plants for next June, salad mix, broccoli, younger  broccoli and cabbage/etc plants, kales, brussels sprouts.  Leeks at the top don’t show.       The north field from the bottom:  baby lettuces, onion seedlings for early onions next year, salad mixes, chard,  fading [...]

Broccoli in the washing machine

Frequently there are screws, washers, coins, etc in the bottom of the washing machine.  Today I was the culprit.  I vaguely remember putting broccoli in the kangaroo pouch pocket of a shirt, but apparently forgot about it.  Broccoli in the washing machine.  Broccoli in the laundry basket taking it down to hang up in the [...]

Time of change

The season seems to be changing.  Not only are nights cooler, but in the garden the old is coming out and the new is being planted. The bugs get worse instead of better though.  The cabbage worms even attacked the broccoli seedlings on tables in the hoophouse. I need to find/buy more storage containers.  I [...]

Fitting it all in

Plant (and insect and disease) growth is very arithmetic.  In the spring when days are lengthening and temperature increasing, things planted a month apart may mature within a week of each other.  Conversely in the fall, with decreasing day light and temperature, things planted a week apart may mature a month apart.  Late fall and [...]

This is week 9 or 10, depending on whether you started as Tuesday or Thursday pickups. Whew – today was a hot one! The farm – things are extremely dry.  The brussels sprouts plants especially are wilted this afternoon. I squeezed a Napa to see if had firmed up and was ready to harvest, but [...]

The tomato muncher is a ground hog!

We haven’t trapped him/her yet, but the evidence is clear.  I started closing the hoophouse at night and large tunnels appeared under the west end wall.  I was afraid  we wouldn’t have enough tomatoes this week for everyone.  They aren’t all  ripe, but we picked everything with a little orange to protect them from the [...]

Felt cooler than it was

Today felt much more comfortable than I expected.  I harvested lots of head lettuce to rescue it from the heat.  Lettuce tends to get bitter in hot weather.  We had a nice cool night, with forecast hot days so I harvested, rinsed, and packed it into the cooler.  Thought I’d run out of totes since [...]
